Anthropic Acquires Startup With One Employee Developing AI-Assisted Drugs

Prior to the deal, the company employed only its founder, Cody Tranbarger. Claude helped him plan experiments and coordinate 11 external laboratories.

Anthropic has acquired the startup Mithril Medicine, which is developing drugs for two rare forms of childhood muscular dystrophy: congenital dystrophy linked to the LAMA2 gene and alpha-dystroglycanopathy.

According to Anthropic, one of the drug candidates progressed from idea to promising results in mice in less than a year and a half. If all goes well, human trials could begin at the end of 2028. For now, the research remains preclinical, and safety and efficacy for humans have not been confirmed.

Tranbarger will lead Anthropic’s internal drug development programs. Additionally, the company collaborates with six pharmaceutical and biotech organizations, including Bristol Myers Squibb and BigHat Biosciences. There, Claude assists at various stages, from molecule design to preparing regulatory documents and planning clinical trials.
