In just one quarter (July–September), Microsoft earned $10 billion from its partnership with OpenAI. This represents nearly 11% of the IT giant's total revenue for the three months.
Last year, the collaboration brought Microsoft $24.1 billion, and at current rates, this figure could grow to $40 billion annually.
OpenAI pays Microsoft for using Azure cloud servers to train and operate neural networks, and also shares a portion of its revenue (estimated by experts at around 20%).
The paradox is that the companies are increasingly competing for clients, and OpenAI is attracting other partners. Yet, their financial interdependence has reached a historic high.
