EU Regulators Investigate Booking.com Operations
The company may face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover due to fake listings and fraud
The European Commission suspects Booking.com of insufficiently protecting users from fake offers and phishing schemes. The regulator believes the platform should assess risks and take more serious measures against fraud in accordance with the EU Digital Services Act.
A European Commission representative described the company’s current approach as 'completely unsatisfactory,' noting that its existing fraud prevention systems could be far more reliable. The authority emphasized that the start of the investigation does not imply a predetermined violation.
Booking.com stated that it is engaging constructively with the European Commission and described security, trust, and the protection of personal data as its top priorities. The company also expressed its readiness to cooperate with governments, regulators, and law enforcement agencies in combating cybercrime and online fraud.
